Four
Peaks Wilderness Area. This wilderness area is not far from the
Phoenix metro area, and is like an island of pine in the middle of vast
stretches of desert. The shade feels good in the summertime.

Pine
Mountain Wilderness Area. Pine Mountain Wilderness Area is near a
little town called Dugas. About 20 difficult miles (that is, a rough
forest service road) east of I-17, and about 60 miles north of Phoenix,
this area is remote and scenic. The wilderness area contains part of
the Verde rim, which, like its larger cousin the Mogollon rim, provides
sweeping vistas that are well worth the climb.

Barnhardt
Trail. This trail
winds its way through the majestic Mazatzal Mountains.

Camelback
Mountain. Camelback
Mountain is not a backpacking destination, since it is located in the
heart of Phoenix. I have included it here because it is still a great
hike (a very challenging climb).

Dutchman
Trail. The Dutchman Trail is a wandering trail, that winds its way
through the Superstition Wilderness.

Eagletail
Wilderness Area. There is only one trail in the wilderness area,
and I was nowhere near it. Pictured at left is Capital Rock. You can't
miss it!

North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness Area.
This wilderness area is one of my favorite destinations. It has a
large flat valley surrounded by the Maricopa Mountains.

Plants
and Animals. This is a collection of pictures and text from all of
my backpacking trips showing plant and animal life in Arizona.

South Mountain Park. This also is not
a backpacking destination, but it is a great place to hike! Note that
South Mountain Park is the largest municipal (city-owned) park in the
world.

Mount
Woolsey. Mount Woolsey is a very odd place indeed.

White
Tanks. The White Tanks park is a county owned park west of Phoenix.
A good backpacking destination for little overnighters with the kids.
